Charles R. Drew University
Welcomes Hurricane Katrina Students

Los Angeles, CA. September 8, 2005 – The College of Medicine and Science and Health at Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles plans to welcome students whose studies have been disrupted due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina.  Drew University will admit for the fall 2005 semester undergraduate students who were enrolled as pre-med and/or health sciences majors at institutions affected by the hurricane.

“We have received a number of phone inquiries from students across the devastated region who are seeking to continue with their education,” said Gary Sayed, PhD, dean of the college. “These students are desperately seeking to find last-minute arrangements and have contacted Drew for assistance. We plan to open our doors and help as many as we can and will waive all application fees.

Other humanitarian relief efforts currently being conducted by the University include an aggressive role in reaching out by enlisting faculty, students and staff in this recovery effort. Through a collaboration with the American Red Cross, the University will collect donations for the Hurricane Katrina 2005 Relief Fund through a campus-wide giving campaign along with a percentage of the 15th Annual Jazz At Drew profits being donated as well.  In addition, the Drew Associated Student Organization (DASO), will design and sell University “Drew Care’s – We Make A Difference” t-shirts, with net proceeds donated to the relief effort.  Anita Bralock, RN, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Science and Health, has volunteered along with a group of local nurses, to fly to Houston as a member of the Red Cross team, to provide emergency health care.
