The Drew Center for Natural Medicine and Prevention was established to scientifically investigate the prevention and treatment of the major chronic diseases of our time through multidisciplinary collaborative research, demonstration programs, and prevention-oriented natural health care.
The Center administers studies being funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), and the national Heart Lung and Blood institute. The Center's research programs focus on the effects of integrative medicine, primarily from the approach of consciousness. Currently the Center is analyzing the efficacy of Transcendental Meditation (TM) on disease prevention and health promotion. There is an emphasis on cardiovascular health, and the quality of life in underserved, high-risk populations.
The Center's latest research has demonstrated:
|
|
| |
- The feasibility and efficacy of the TM program in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease/ diabetes and its associated risk factors, such as hypertension
- Prevention of atherosclerosis
- Improvement in well-being and quality of life
- Prevention of aging and promotion of longevity
- Reduced medical care utilization and expenditures

These studies have included related findings on behavioral and physiological mechanisms for the clinical outcomes investigated in our trials. Many of these published studies have received wide-scale media coverage in hundreds of newspaper, magazine articles, and television and radio shows. One such study that was published in the March, 2000 American Heart Association's Journal on Stoke found that the TM program may be beneficial in reducing plaque in the carotid artery. |
|
| |
Ongoing collaborative research studies include: |
|
| |
- The long-term effects of the TM program on heart disease/diabetes in African Americans
- The long-term effects of the TM program on cardiovascular issues in African Americans.
